Aikido Schedule

Adult Aikido

For new students, please note: whenever possible we recommend students arrive, change, and get on the mat at least 15 minutes before class starts in order to stretch and prepare for class on their own. Arriving late or barely on time, limits one’s ability to fully stretch and mentally prepare for class, which can make practice less safe and present for everyone.

Aikido Schedule Notes

  • Aikido: Classes for new beginners (who do not yet know how to safely fall) include the Basic Aikido class (Tue 7pm),  any of the Mixed Aikido classes (Mon 7pm, Sun 9:45pm), and any weapons class (Thu 6pm Sword; Sun 11pm jo).
  • Teen students are welcome to join in all adult classes.
  • Outdoor practice: Saturday & Sunday classes may, very occasionally, be outdoors at the field next to school when weather is pleasant.
  • Open Mat: Open mat times are not formal taught classes. Members are welcome to solo or pair practice during that time, drag out the big cushy mats for break-falls, do solo or partner weapons work, etc.
  • Private Lessons: Private lessons are sometimes offered by Steve Shihan and others. These times are not available for open mat practice.
  • Holiday / Weather Cancellations: Classes are year-round except for select holidays and seminar weekends. 2-3 month “series” classes are held for a set number of lessons – visit the new students and tai chi pages for their respective date schedules.

Please join the listserv for up to date holiday and weather closings.

Children Aikido

The young children’s Aikido program is on pause for the time being. Mature teens may be considered for practice with the adult program. Parents interested in the return of the program are welcome to email their interest – as the interest and waitlist grows we hope to restart that kids / teen program.

Tai Chi Classes

See the Tai Chi page for more details, including the class and session schedules. We expect our Tai Chi program and class offerings to grow in the future.

Scheduled School Closings

Open Sky is closed Thanksgiving Day in November, Christmas and Christmas Eve in December, and New Year’s day in January. Usual classes are cancelled if there is a conflict during seminar weekends. To receive notices about weather closings and special events visit our contact page to join the Open Sky mailing list; in general, if nearby schools are closed or delayed for weather, or if roads are notably unsafe (iced over) for driving, we will cancel classes for safety’s sake.
